Coronavirus Treatment in Pregnant Women

Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-19 has become one of the most important epidemics in the world.  As a global health problem, it has been on the world agenda for more than 1 year.  The disease agent is the virus named Sars-Cov2, which comes from the coronavirus family.  COVID-19 disease, which affects the whole world in a short time with its fast transmission feature, is an infection that creates respiratory problems.  It has also been found that the disease, which is characterized by fever and shortness of breath, causes loss of smell and taste.

COVID-19 is a disease that the medical world does not fully recognize yet.  Research into the virus and disease continues.  Every day, new findings are revealed by researchers in various parts of the world.  COVID-19, which causes serious health problems in advanced cases and can be severe in case of a chronic disease underlying it, and even causes the patient to die, may worry pregnant women.

Is pregnancy a risk factor for coronavirus?

Coronavirus is known to be risky in elderly and people with chronic diseases.  Therefore, pregnancy is not a direct risk factor for coronavirus.  However, pregnancy is a sensitive period and it is a critical period in terms of mother and baby health.  For this reason, COVID-19 should be protected as much as possible during pregnancy and the disease should be seen as a risk.

How is coronavirus treated in pregnant women?

Coronavirus treatment is different during pregnancy.  The main principle in treatment is that antivital therapy should not be administered unless it is complicated.  Therefore, coronavirus should be overcome by resting the mother isolated at home in pregnant women who do not have respiratory distress, have no problems with nutrition, and whose disease is not severe.  If the mother-to-be has a mild illness, she should pay attention to her nutrition, and balance her immune system by eating a balanced diet with food supplements such as fruit.

Coronavirus treatment in pregnant women is a sensitive issue.  Hydroxychloroquine, one of the coronavirus drugs, should be used by the doctor if deemed appropriate according to the patient’s condition.  Hospitalization of pregnant women with severe disease is appropriate.  Low-dose paracetamol can be given as a pain reliever.

Coronavirus cases during pregnancy should be treated with the knowledge of the doctor.  If there is, disease information such as chronic blood pressure of pregnant women should be given to the doctor.  In these cases, hospitalization may be required.
